WG2 - Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems (NEMS)

The scope is to create a forum for those in Europe interested and active in the creation of new nano-electro-mechanical devices and systems. The NEMS-WG will be based on activities like seminars, tutorials on a specific topic and the building of roadmaps in nanomechatronics for the future ICT applications. It is also planned to organize NEMS-specific training activities, and to have NEMS researchers exchange visits funded. The basic idea is to bring together researchers working on specific topics in the emerging field of nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS) in order to defragment the NEMS activity.

The following topics will be covered:
     -Mechanics at nanoscale
     -Fabrication techniques for NEMS elements
     -Materials for NEMS (e.g. novel piezo/ferroelectric NEMS)
     -Detection methods, interfacing of NEMS
     -Applications of NEMS (e.g. probe arrays)
     -Links to life-sciences (e.g. Bio-NEMS)
     -Roadmapping: opportunities, risks and barriers

The NEMS WG is addressing mainly two of the axis listed in the “nano-scale ICT devices and systems” call:
1) new functionalities: mechanical devices with extreme dimensions, reduced viscous friction, surface sensitive, strain sensitive; new materials (layer by layer, 2D layers) with enhanced transport properties, including piezo/ferroelectric; nano-Piezo elements; self-sensing and self-actuating; minimum power dissipation; highly parallel;
2) one of the major potential applications for NEMS are as highly miniaturized, parallel, VLSI resonating element as nano-switches or nano-relays; for memory cells; to use as mechanical oscillator, RF-(VHF)NEMS
